During the period of the American Confederation — between the Promulgation of Independence (1776) and the founding of the U.S. Pots in 1792 — a number of states established mints to procure coins. This was necessary in order for resident commerce to flourish — and if done rectitude, it could also provide a handsome profit for the governmental that issued the coins.

States such as Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Vermont and Maryland all issued heterogeneous types of coins, as did Massachusetts — the beginning of this particular piece. During the Confederation interval, it was the practice of most states to outflow franchises to private groups and individuals to manipulate a mint.
